FAIR TRADE, NOT AID
GET TO KNOW THEM…
We have been working with the Equitable Marketing Association (EMA) Factory right from the very beginning! EMA, run by the lovely woman Swapna Das, was established in 1977 and is recognized as a full Fair-Trade body by World Fair Trade Organization. The workers at EMA comprise of poor artisans, farmers, craftsmen and weavers who enjoy decent living by producing various types of Fair-Trade products including the O My Bags you know and love. As we are growing and evolving, we are delighted to see EMA and all its employees evolve with us!
When stepping through the doors of the EMA Factory, one steps from the hectic Kolkata life into a peaceful haven. In the centre of the different buildings on site, there is a tranquil garden full of trees and flowers that were all handpicked by Swapna when she started out, way back. The vegetable garden on site supplies for fresh herbs and veggies that are used for lunch. Because the people working at EMA don’t only get to enjoy benefits like health insurance, retirement plans and maternity leaves and compensation, they also enjoy a nice big, freshly prepared lunch every day! The 50 people that have to travel longer to get to work and that stay on site are treated to breakfast, dinner and accommodation as well.
Of the 148 people working at EMA, over 25% of them are women and this number is continuing to rise. Also, 2-3 times per year a skill development training is organized and the trainees are selected in an unbiased manner to ensure everyone gets an equal opportunity to participate. There is a suggestion box in place where any worker can post their suggestions or problems. When asking around it turns out that the employees are most happy with the friendly and open atmosphere. ‘Everyone talks to everyone and it feels like a family’
