ECO & FAIR
O My Bag’s purpose is to produce bags that not only make you look good, but that also make a positive difference in the world. By making well made and eco friendly leather bags and accessories available to consumers, we provide small communities in India with a sustainable livelihood. We’ve concluded that supporting conscious trade is the best way to alleviate poverty, and it’s what we get up for in the mornings.
We try to have a minimum environmental impact and therefore only use a natural tanning process. Our lovely bags are made from luxurious, vegetable-tanned leather. Our leathers are tanned without the use of harmful chemicals like chromium. This makes our leather biodegradable. Our leather will age beautifully over time the more you use it. It deepens in color, gets softer, and develops a nice sheen.
We use local cow hides from Kolkata, India and Italy. The hides are a waste product from the meat industry and therefore not raised for the fashion industry. We believe that using vegetable tanned leather is currently the most sustainable option to produce bags that you can use for a lifetime. This is why we do not use any alternative synthetic materials that are called vegan leather alternatives. These alternatives are mostly made from PU, PVC or other composite microfibres, which produce many harmful toxins in the production process and don’t fully biodegrade. Also these alternatives will never last as long or age and develop over time. We make an effort to design timeless pieces that you can carry and cherish for years.

Our Canvas Collection is made from GOTS certificated cotton. GOTS certified cotton is an organic cotton that is grown without any harmful pesticides or fertilizers, to preserve soil health. During the dyeing process, no heavy chemicals are used. The GOTS certification also guarantees fair trade conditions. All employees work in a safe and healthy environment and they earn living wages.
Our signature cotton lining and dust bags are another inherent part of our products and are as well made with organic cotton. Since 2018 the cotton for our lining and dust bags all comes from the Anandi Eco-Farm project which works with farmers from the Tamil Nadu district, India. This project provides non-GMO seeds, technical support, training on organic production and advises how to protect the local environment and health within their communities.
With help of our logistics partner we try to control our CO2 emissions. We track our carbon footprint and constantly work to minimize our footprint. Thanks to our great team and their planning, we are able to keep our deliveries frequency low.
To cover our CO2 emissions we purchase carbon offsets. Simply put, we compensate emitted pollution by investing in a project that prevents Amazon rainforest deforestation from original plants and protect biodiversity. The Envira Amazonia Project provides local communities with benefits from agricultural trainings and new employment opportunities. By saving ancient trees that absorb CO2 we try to become carbon neutral. Read more about the Envira Amazonia Project.
Our packaging is made from recycled materials, and is certified by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The cardboard boxes carry your new O My Bag safely all over the world, but the materials come from local resources in The Netherlands.
We encourage our customer to find ways to reuse our boxes or give them a second life by recycling. We keep on working at packaging improvements to make them more sustainable and reduce negative impact on the environment. Do you have any ideas on how to further improve our packaging? Please let us know.
O My Bag was founded on support to people in developing countries and creating fairly paid job opportunities. Creating a positive impact in the world is a one of our core values and is rooted in everything we do. We believe that everyone has the power to create change. With every purchase we make, we can contribute to a better world with fairly-paid jobs, safe working environments, equal opportunities, women empowerment and bring better living opportunities to everyone.
With these values in mind, we work together with different manufacturers in Kolkata, India which rely on the same principles. Over the years we have build strong relationships in which we are able to work together with respect and honesty. We talk to our producers on a weekly, but often on a daily basis. This helps us to keep direct insights into, and control over, our supply chain. All our factories have SA 8000 certification standards to ensure that all operate under fair conditions. The EMA (Equitable Marketing Association) factory, with which we have been working from the very beginning, has a World Fair Trade Certification.
We seek the best factories to make our products and every factory has a story.
We cooperate with two tanneries. The Sheong Shi Tannery in Kolkata, India, is with us from the very beginning. With their help we were able to co-create high quality eco-friendly leathers and work on innovations in the leather industry. Together with this tannery we have developed our beloved Hunter Leather used in our Signature Collection, the soft Midnight Leather used in our Midnight Collection and the first Classic Leathers. Patrick Lee and his wife Veronica, owners of the tannery, care for all their employees and their families and make sure they live a life with future perspectives.
The second tannery is located in Tuscany, Italy. We started to work with them in 2016. Reason for this was a lack of high quality hides in India which are a need for vegetable-tanned leather. Luckily we found Conceria Nuova Grenoble. A consortium of 22 tanneries with the same passion for vegetable-tanned leather and with the same production standards with respect for nature. All tanneries use purification systems and have a waste management system that recovers, reuses and recycles the production substances.
