The Loyal Workshop & OMB
At the O My Bag office, women have all the power. Ok, minor detail: only women work here. From owner to intern, we are all women. Our customers are also mainly women. Ok, minor detail: they say women love bags so that just ‘might’ be the reason our male customer base is a bit smaller (but growing!).
In India we also work with a lot of ladies: all our factories have women in high managing positions. Adding to that a lot of women work in these factories to actually make our O My Bag’s with great love and care (the people who are actually making it happen!). Women on the workfloor is however less obvious in India because unfortunately, gender equality is not business as usual.
You could conclude we’ve surrounded ourselves with high levels of oestrogen… Is that a coincidence or is it a choice? Well, that’s a interesting question! You could say it ‘started off’ as a coincidence. Empowering women was not the main goal of starting O My Bag. There just happened to be a lot of women crossing Paulien’s (the founder) path to success up until now. Working with strong, creative and clever women is what inspires her and the team. The choice of working with women in Amsterdam is more obvious and ‘normal’, but in India gender discrimination continues to be a enormous problem. Traditionally patriarchal norms have relegated women to secondary status within the household and workplace. This awareness drives us to make women empowerment one of our missions. To us this mission comes very naturally.
In this light, we are so happy to announce our newest collaboration with The Loyal Workshop. Let us introduce them to you.
The Loyal Workshop
The Loyal Workshop was founded to provide an opportunity for freedom. They believe that another world is possible; a world where sex slavery is banned to the history books. It’s a brazen dream but they are putting it into action in one city, in one red-light community, with one woman at a time.
The artisans that work for the Loyal Workshop are women from backgrounds of poverty, each with their own story of trauma and oppression: sold, stolen, trafficked and forced against their will into the sex trade. Without prospect of finding alternative employment, they were trapped. But still with dreams, great talents and larger than life personalities.
Tag yourself! #notyourordinarytag
We’ve teamed up with fellow change makers from The Loyal Workshop to make a eco-leather luggage tag. This is not your ordinary luggage tag. This is a luggage tag with double the impact: support the women who bravely fought for their freedom and escaped the sex trade in Kolkata, India and make a statement choice for a sustainable and fair world.
Each O My Bag and The Loyal Workshop luggage tag is hand stitched by these women and is now available on our webshop. Be sure to be the first to order here
On their behalf, thanks for your support!
